Abstract

The role of the cooperativity of hydrogen bonding and of dichotomously branching transfers of protons has been studied on the basis of the dynamical square lattice model which can be considered as a direct two-dimensional generalization of the well-known Aubry-Krumhansl-Schrieffer kink-bearing model with the Bernal-Fowler ice rules imposed as a constraint. The extended positive (H_3O+) and negative (OH-) ionic defects are shown to be described by 2D topological solitons which appear to be singular at their centers.
