[portrait] Bernd J Schroers
Reader in mathematical physics
After attending the United World College of the Atlantic I studied physics and mathematics at the University of Bonn and obtained my Ph.D. at the University of Cambridge (DAMTP). I then worked as a post doc in Durham, and Amsterdam and as an EPSRC advanced research fellow at the University of Edinburgh before joining Heriot-Watt University as a lecturer in 2000.
My research interests all lie in mathematical physics and include quantum gravity in (2+1) dimensions, quantum groups, topological solitons (particularly magnetic monopoles, vortices and Skyrmions) and geometrical aspects of gauge theory. For details see my papers. To find out about other research in mathematical physics in Edinburgh, look at the homepage of the Edinburgh mathematical physics group ( EMPG ). If you are interested in quantum gravity, have a look at the recent Workshop on Noncommutative Deformations of Special Relativity , or at the Workshop on Geometry and Physics of Three-dimensional Quantum Gravity which I organised together with John Barrett and Justin Roberts in June 2003.
