Professor Andrew Stuart Warwick University Andrew Stuart is a leading numerical analyst, and his work has been at the forefront of the development of computational analysis of evolving systems. He has investigated the relationships between dynamical systems and their computational models, and has contributed theoretical and practical advances in that area, as well as to the study of differential equations. His work is internationally renowned, and has been recognised by the award of numerous prizes. |
"What I try to do is to use modern tools for understanding evolution
problems to interpret algorithms, to understand the senses in which
they are good or bad, to try to differentiate between existing
algorithms, and to try to get insight into how you might construct
new algorithms that will have some desirable property.
"I like the opportunity to go and learn something new, and then use it
to try and understand some phenomena that I think are of interest. There
is always that aspect, of choosing something that I find mathematically
stimulating. I try to choose problems that are coming from reality, that
have structures that come from applications that people are interested in.
"I might have some material that I am broadly
interested in, and I've seen some resonance between that piece of
mathematics and some application, and I'll then start to try to look
in a little bit more detail at how those things fit together, and to see
whether my intuition was right, that this piece of mathematics will
be useful to help understand that kind of problem.
"I like the fact that mathematics is going on in my mind all the
time, but sometimes I don't. Does that make sense?"
