Course Information
The 3rd year numerical analysis modules are 11.3YC1, 11.3YG2, and 11.3YM3.
11.3YC1
Module 11.3YC1, Introductory Numerical Analysis, is concerned with the
numerical solution of equations, introduction to the Matlab package for
numerical calculations, numerical quadrature (approximate integration),
and errors and computer arithmetic. The course aims to give an
introduction to some of the basic methods of numerical analysis and to
provide the groundwork for the rest of our 3rd and 4th year numerical
analysis courses.
The module is examined in one written exam at the end of Term 1, and in
the one practical test involving Matlab. The exam counts for 80% of
the mark and the test counts for 20%.
11.3YG2 and 11.3YM3
These modules cover numerical linear algebra, solution of nonlinear
equations, numerical integration, interpolation, and practical examples
using Matlab. The two modules are examined by a single examination at
the end of Term 3.
Recommended Books
- Main Text:
Numerical Analysis (5th ed.), by Burden & Faires, published by PWS-Kent.
-
Secondary Text:
Numerical Methods for Mathematics, Science and Engineering (2nd ed.),
by J.H. Mathews, published by Prentice-Hall.
-
Programming: The Student Edition of MATLAB, published
by the MathWorks Inc.
Burden & Faires and the MATLAB book are used in all the numerical
analysis courses in 3rd and 4th year. All three books are on 3 hour
loan and B&F is also on week loan with multiple copies in the
library.
