I am a professor in the
Mathematics Department
of Heriot-Watt University.
I have been here since 1990 and became a reader in 1996, and then a
professor in 2009.
Before that I worked on a succession of short term contracts in a random
sequence of British Universities.
Interests other than maths include mountaineering in Scotland (i.e. trudging across mist shrouded bogs in the rain in summer; trudging across snowfields in white-outs in winter) and walking in the Lake District. In summer, on the occasions when the sun shines, I go and dangle from ropes on vertical rock faces wishing I had real muscles rather than the mathematician's variety (see here). Other times I go on rock-climbing holidays or long distance cycle tours in countries which are hot and dry and produce lots of good cheap wine. To see what effect 20 years of all this has had on me, my departmental photoboard photo in 1990 is here. |
