Research Assessment Exercise

Outstanding success for Actuarial Mathematics and Statistics:

5 out of 5* for Research

The outstanding international reputation of the Department was acknowledged in December 2001 with the award of a grade 5 (within the subject area of Statistics and OR) in the UK Research Assessment Exercise (RAE). This places the Department amongst the leading centres of research in the UK in the broad field of Statistics and Operational Research. In Scotland only one statistics group achieved this grade with a larger number of research active staff.

Of particular note, this award identified the group as the leading centre of research in actuarial mathematics in the UK: no other university department in the UK with an active actuarial research group achieved such a high grade.

We consider this as a resounding endorsement of the high quality of our research programmes in Probability, Statistics, Genetics & Insurance, Actuarial Mathematics, and Financial Mathematics.

The RAE aims to grade the research in all UK universities and in all subject areas. A grade 5 equates to a recognition that a substantial part of the research output of the department is of an international standard.
