Module Online Resources

Lecturer
The tutorials are given by Anatoly Konechny,
who will be happy
to help with any questions you may have about the workshops. Feel free to
email him at A.Konechny@ma.hw.ac.uk or visit him in Colin Maclaurin
building room T09.
Aims
This section of the course is an
introduction to the algebraic manipulation, numerical calculation and
graph plotting computer package ``Maple'', which is a useful aid to
doing mathematical calculations and visualizing their results. We
will investigate how to use Maple to help us by using a selection of
typical calculations from your first year courses.
The course consists of three 2 week sections. In each
section a tutorial sheet will be give out in the first week covering all
the material in that section. You should work through the tutorial
during the workshop and in your own time. The second week
of each section is a timed assessment containing similar questions to
those on the tutorial. You are expected to hand in a printed version of
your assessment solutions at the end of the workshop. The three
assessments carry an equal weighting of marks and in total contribute 15
% of
the final mark for module F7.1SC3.
The tutorial sessions and the assessment sessions alternate with the
tutorials given on weeks 1,3,5 and the assessments held on weeks 2,4,7.
Note there are no workshops in week 6 this year due to University
holidays.
Syllabus
The course is divided into three sections:
- Introduction. Maple as a calculator. Expressions. Plotting.
- Algebra. Algebraic expressions. Solving equations. Matrices
and linear algebra.
- Calculus. Limits, differentiation and integration. Solving
ordinary differential equations (ODEs) and recurrence relations.
Location
The classes are being held in rooms 12/13/14 on the ground floor of
Scott Russel building
Books and Notes
You will be provided with course notes so you should not need any
text books for this part of the module. Those of you in the Mathematics
Department who take the advanced Maple course in second year might
find a book useful to cover this year and next. Other students
might find a book helpful to explore and use
Maple in future.
There are lots of Maple books available including " First Steps in
Maple" by W. Burkhardt and "Introduction to Maple" by A. Heck. Browse
through them and see if they make sense to you before buying! For home
use the package "Student Edition of Maple" is also available, this
consists of a cut-down version of the full Maple programme and various
introductory Maple books and reference guides. It currently sells for
about 100 £. The full version of Maple, which we are using here,
is considerably more expensive!
