A distinguished international selection committee made the second
"International Stephanos Pnevmatikos Award" of 10,000 USD to Dr. Yuri
Kivshar of the Optical Sciences Centre at Australian National
University Canberra for his numerous outstanding contributions in the
area of soliton theory. The award was presented to Dr. Kivshar by
Professor Alwyn Scott, one of the leading workers in soliton theory and
nonlinear science, during an international conference on ``Nonlinear
coherent structures in physics and biology'' held at Heriot-Watt
University, Edinburgh during July 10-14 1995.
The award is made every two years by the Foundation of Research and Technology Hellas (FORTH) in memory of the late Professor Stephanos Pnevmatikos, an important contributor to the field of nonlinear phenomena whose life and blossoming career were cut short when he was murdered in 1990 aged 33. The recipient of the award must be a scientist aged under forty who has contributed significantly towards theoretical and/or experimental work in the general area of nonlinear phenomena. |
