SCMS - BACKGROUND

The Scottish Computational Mathematics Symposium (SCMS) one day meetings are held every year in September with the aim of bringing together mathematicians and others who develop and/or use computer algorithms to solve mathematical problems. The meetings are open to everyone interested.

The first 12 meetings were organised by David Sloan (Mathematics, Strathclyde University) and Dugald Duncan (Mathematics, Heriot-Watt University). The 2003 meeting (the 12th) was part of a bigger conference, and was jointly organised with Penny Davies (Mathematics, Strathclyde). The 13th meeting marked Dave Sloan's retirement and was organised by Stuart Bramley (Strathclyde), Dugald Duncan and Des Higham (Strathclyde).

Financial support for many of the past meetings has come from the London Mathematical Society. Other financial support was obtained from the Edinburgh Mathematical Society, EPSRC and the Glasgow Mathematical Journal Trust. We are very grateful to all of these bodies for their help, which was essential to make the meetings possible.
