Welcome to the information page for Post-Graduate Study in Mathematics

Our courses start in September each year and you should consider making applications as early as possible.

If you do not already have a good degree in Mathematics or very closely related subject please see either

  • our Undergraduate Guide or
  • Graduate Certificate.

    Suggested Programme of Post-Graduate Study

    Academic English (Recommended)
If you are not a native English speaker you might want to improve your spoken and written technical English.

With a good English qualification you can proceed onto a Mathematics MSc

We offer taught post-graduate courses blending theory and applications. We have core courses and options in both pure and applied mathematics, statistics and scientific computing. These will prepare you for more in-depth study or to apply these skills in industry, commerce and education.

Optional interdisciplinary courses in financial mathematics, engineering mathematics, management and computing/IT.

If you complete the MSc successfully you may consider the PhD Programme

The departments are highly rated: In the 2001 RAE exercise, Heriot-Watt University achieved grade 5s.

We have leading researchers in both Pure Mathematics topics such as analysis, algebra, topology, semi-group theory and Applied Mathematics such as numerical analysis, bifurcation theory, mathematical biology.

We are part of the Maxwell Institute for Mathematical Sciences partnership with Edinburgh University, and we share our research activities. There are currently 90 academic members of staff and 20 or so post-doctoral research fellows and research assistants in the Maxwell Institute.

  • We can offer reduced fees through a School Scholarship, but we cannot pay living expenses.
(Form here. Deadline End May.) This will be competitive so we would be looking for excellent qualifications. Other funding is also available for Scottish and EU students eg through SAAS.
