Frequently Asked Questions

What is a Financial Guarantee Letter?

Before you come along to study we need to know that your study will not be cut short for financial reasons. You may apply before you have the promise of financial support but your offer will be conditional on supplying a financial guarantee. A financial guarantee is either a signed letter from the person or organisation who will pay your fees or, if you are going to pay your own expenses, a reference or statement from your banker showing that you have enough money to meet these expenses. Unless you are a distance learning student, you also need to show that you can meet the cost of living in or close to the University. Our International Office estimates that it costs approximately £7,500 to live as a single student in Edinburgh for a year. (2004/5 Figures)
