Welcome to the department
We are one of three in the School of Mathematical and Computer Sciences at Heriot-Watt University.
We are part of the Maxwell Institute for Mathematical Sciences,
the joint research institute of mathematical sciences at Heriot-Watt and Edinburgh
Universities, with excellent results in the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise.

Mark Lawson, Senior Lecturer and a Director of Studies in Mathematics, was awarded the
Graduates' Teaching Prize at the MACS Summer Graduation 2011.
Nominations for the Prize are made by students as part of the Learning and Teaching Oscars organised by Heriot-Watt University
Students' Association. In announcing the Prize at the Graduation Ceremony, Heriot-Watt Principal Professor Steve Chapman
noted that its award recognised Mark's engaging teaching style, his enthusiasm, and his generous commitment of time to
students.
Martin Youngson, Lecturer and a Director of Studies in Mathematics, won the
Guiding Hand Award - Teaching Oscar 2011 in a process run by the Heriot-Watt University
Students' Association. Candidates for awards
were nominated by students from across the university.
