Free subgroups in groups of small deficiency

Abstract
It is shown that finitely presented groups of deficiency 1
with sufficiently big abelian homomorphic images contain free
subgroups. Somewhat weaker results are obtained for groups of
deficiency 0.
These results are applied to a conjecture of Rosenberger, that
generalised trianglegroups satisfy a Tits alternative.
