How it Works
For a taught degree: see the MSc pages
For a degree by research:
Day to day
Each postgraduate student has a supervisor (or joint supervisors) responsible
for giving guidance on the research project. Typically there will be
regular (weekly) meetings between the student and supervisor
although supervisors are also available for consultation at other times
as the need arises.
Each year a report is written by the student and this is reviewed
internally. An internal meeting is held with the student to access
progress and for the student to give feedback.
Computer facilities
As a PhD student you will be given a computer account in the
department and have access to the departmental network of SUN
computers.
For those doing more intensive computations high-performance computing
facities are available.
Library facilities
The
university library contains a large number of books and journals,
as well as providing access to a large number of databases and
research tools. It is also possible for Heriot-Watt students to borrow
books and journals from any of the Edinburgh University libraries.
Tutorials
Ph.D. students have the possibility to
assist with the tutorial teaching of undergraduate students. In
addition to providing extra income, this provides a valuable
opportunity to gain some teaching experience.
