Funding your Ph.D.
The Engineering and Physical
Sciences Research Council (EPSRC)
is the primary source for mathematics funding in the UK. At Heriot-Watt we
are able to offer two or three EPSRC funded PhD positions
("studentships") per year to suitably qualified applicants from the
UK. The studentships cover both the tuition fees as well as a cost of living
allowance. EC nationals are also eligible to apply for these grants, however
these only cover the cost of fees. In addition, there is the possibility of
applying for CASE studentships, partially funded through industry.
For overseas students, there are a number of possibilities for funding to
support a PhD, including university funded ORS grants. See the relevant pages
of the university postgraduate
prospectus for more details on how to apply for these grants.
The British
council also offers advice to international students on how to obtain
funding to pursue research degrees in the UK. There is a searchable database
that details possible funding sources.
Other sources of funding
There are a number of other
sources for funding your studies. Of particular note is the Carnegie Trust,
which funds suitably qualified students in Scotland.
The Higher
Education and Research Opportunities website contains some
links to other institutions that fund PhD studentiships.
All postgraduate students in the Department have the opportunity to
supplement their earnings by assisting with tutorial teaching of
undergraduate students.
