Edinburgh,
the Scottish capital, is an attractive and compact modern city with a
great historical tradition. It is an administrative capital and
international centre of finance, insurance and commerce, not by
tradition a heavily industrial city. The combination of city life and
culture, yet with ease access to the natural beauty of the Scottish Highlands
make this a most enjoyable place to spend a year.
As a financial centre Edinburgh is second only to London in the UK and is the second biggest centre in Europe for equity investment management. There is a long tradition of association with life insurance companies around St. Andrew Square, and the Faculty of Actuaries has its headquarters here. Edinburgh has good public transport services and excellent road, rail and air connections with all parts of the UK and Europe.
The city's established reputation as an international
centre of cultural activity is reflected in its museums, libraries, theatres, art
galleries, restaurants and musical life, and so presents its
visitors with a stimulating intellectual forum. Edinburgh is home to
Europe's premier International
Festival of music and drama, the famous Fringe Festival and Film
Festival; and in addition to Book, TV, Jazz and other Festivals - and
not forgetting the world-famous Military Tattoo, played out on the
Castle Esplanade with its stunning backdrop. The city has also
established itself as a major venue for "Hogmanay" (New Year)
celebrations. Edinburgh also plays host to international sporting and
athletics meetings.
