Founded in 1972, the Actuarial Mathematics and Statistics department at Heriot-Watt was the first department of its kind in the UK and is now one of the world's leading centres for teaching and research in these areas, achieving Grade 5 in the most recent UK Research Assessment. Active links to employers in the public and private sectors are strong and interaction is promoted and encouraged. The current composition of full-time staff includes 12 actuaries/financial mathematicians, 10 statisticians plus a research consultant. More details about individuals in the department can be found here. The department is part of the collegiate grouping that makes up the School of Mathematical and Computer Sciences.
