Department of Actuarial Mathematics and Statistics, Heriot-Watt

Founded in 1972, the Actuarial Mathematics and Statistics department at Heriot-Watt was the first department of its kind in the UK and is now one of the world's leading centres for teaching and research in these areas, achieving Grade 5 in the most recent UK Research Assessment. Active links to employers in the public and private sectors are strong and interaction is promoted and encouraged. The current composition of full-time staff includes 12 actuaries/financial mathematicians, 10 statisticians plus a research consultant. School of Mathematics, Edinburgh

There are over 50 academic and related staff and around 30 research students. The school also runs up to 3 MSc courses and undergraduate courses are given to around 2000 students in any one year.  The School was judged "Excellent" in the last Teaching Quality Assessment and was rated 5* (Pure), 5 (Applied) and 4 (Statistics and Operational Research) in the 2001 Research Assessment Exercise. It is committed to maintaining and improving the quality of its teaching provision, including the related administrative procedures. School of Management and Languages, Heriot-Watt

The School is the largest in the University and is based on both the Edinburgh and Scottish Borders (Galashiels) campuses. It is committed to providing high quality education and research in its key areas of expertise, which are reflected by the School's 4 main departments:
