Steering Committee

GIRC has funding from a number of insurance companies, under the aegis of the Association of British Insurers. It is completely autonomous and independent: all its work will be in the public domain, and it is overseen by a broadly-based steering committee on which geneticists, actuaries and genetic interest groups are represented.

During 1999-2003 the members of the steering committee were:

  • Mike Dougall: Actuary and Underwriter, CGNU (from 12/00 to 07/02).
  • Norman Gould: Actuary and Underwriter, Scottish Widows (from 01/01).
  • Sally Hannington: Actuary, Norwich Union (to 12/00).
  • Alastair Kent: Director, Genetic Interest Group.
  • Jack MacNamara: Chief Underwriter, Lincoln Re (to 01/01).
  • Robert Plumb: Actuary.
  • David Porteous: Professor of Medical Genetics, University of Edinburgh.
  • Tim Simmerson: Actuary, CGNU (from 07/02).
  • Sandy Raeburn: Professor of Medical Genetics, University of Nottingham and Genetics Adviser to the ABI.
During 2003-2006, the members of the steering committee were:
  • Harry Campbell: Professor of Genetic Epidemiology, University of Edinburgh.
  • Julie Hopkins: Chief Underwriter, Hannover Re
  • Alastair Kent: Director, Genetic Interest Group.
  • Robert Plumb: Actuary.
  • David Porteous: Professor of Medical Genetics, University of Edinburgh.
  • Sandy Raeburn: Formerly Professor of Medical Genetics, University of Nottingham and Genetics Adviser to the ABI.
  • Mike Ross: Actuary, formerly CEO of Scottish Widows.
  • Virginia Warren: Consultant on Public Health, BUPA.
